Monolith on the East River:
A Space for Spectacle and Performance on the East River
A monolithic mass hovering over the East River, the building shrouds performance spaces, classrooms, a bar, and indoor galleries in its mass. Underneath the mass, an indoor/outdoor sculpture gallery sits within a retaining wall beneath the surface of the river.
Envisioned as a space for a Nick Cave (sculpter, dancer, and performer) collection, the Monolith is a performing arts center, community education facility, and sculpture gallery sited off of the Queens shore of the East River in New York City at the Socrates Sculpture Park.
The complex supplements the sculpture garden with a performing arts center, interior and exterior gallery and sculpture display space and classrooms for arts curriculum for the local community.
